Job Title: Medical Technologist
Department: Lab
Reports to: VP Diagnostic Services
Classification: .90 to 1.0 Full Time Benefited
Hours: Various shifts, Rotating Call 6-8 nights a month

JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for independently performing, interpreting and correlating clinical
laboratory tests to assist physician diagnosis and treatment. Determines test
results meet requirements of the quality control program and ensures results are approved for reporting following department policy. Maintains all necessary
records and documentation. Would prefer someone with a strong chemistry
background due to the purchase of new equipment.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Functions
1. Maintains a safe and clean working environment for all employees by following all
    required lab safety, chemical hygiene, universal precaution policies and regulatory
    agency requirements. (AABB, OSHA, CLIA). Correct or report potentially unsafe
    acts or conditions.
2. Ensures tests are performed on specimens that are properly identified, collected,     labeled and stored. Troubleshoots any problems or discrepancies encountered.
3. Collects a variety of specimens with skill and sensitivity to the age and needs of
    the patient.
4. Instructs patients in medical necessity and procures Advanced Beneficiary Notice
    as necessary.
5. Analyzes specimens following laboratory procedures and policies to ensure quality
    in a timely manner. Determines validity of test results based on instrument
    operation, results of quality control, specimen integrity and correlation with other
    laboratory tests or patient information.
6. Reports test results maintaining necessary written or computer records according
    to policy and procedure.
7. Performs instrument and test system quality control and maintenance according
    to laboratory procedures. Troubleshoots problems encountered.
8. Maintains proficiency in computer skills necessary to order, modify, result,
    correct and cancel/credit patient inquiry.
9. Serves as a resource for other staff or clients regarding laboratory matters.
10. Assists in maintaining inventory of supplies and reagents through documentation
     and/or communication.
11. Serves as a role model and mentor to other laboratory staff and new employees.
12. Completes mandatory training as required for position.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
-Bachelor’s degree in related field. Registry or registry eligible for MT (ASCP) or equivalent.
-Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain critical thinking and complex problem solving skills.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Risk of exposure to: Blood & bodily fluids, Latex, Odors, chemicals, Disease, Sharps,
TB (to require mask), Mechanical/Electrical, Air borne organisms, Carcinogens

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting/turning from waist, handling (holding, grasping, working with hands), fine finger manipulation (pinching, picking, working with fingers). Occasional walking, standing, pushing/pulling objects on rollers/wheels, reaching above shoulder level, moving objects horizontally (left to right) up to 50 lbs. and vertically (up and down) up to 10 lbs. Senses are needed to perform the essential functions of the position. Frequent need to hear and talk in quiet/noisy surroundings and talk/hear with over the telephone. Vision for near/far acuity, depth perception, color vision. Touch for feeling (size, shape, temperature, texture by finger receptors). Smell to determine hot/burning equipment.
